Metal Garden Co-Op

Site: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Studio Critic: Keith VanDerSys
PennDesign Spring 2012

This studio investigated the concept of collaborative space and symbiotic programming through the framework of collaborative workspaces (Co-Op). The site, situated in Philadelphia between Old City and Northern Liberties, is an area that falls between the cracks of two distinct neighborhoods. The Metal Garden Co-Op creates a sense of place and community that unites the area while simultaneously stitching together adjacent urban fabrics. Research provided insight to how the site functions within its property lines as well as beyond within the larger urban context. This information grounds design and organizes architectural form and programming. The location of the site allows the building to appeal to disparate user groups in the surrounding area: artists, community gardeners, and students. By providing each with designated studios, gardens, and classrooms in adjacent nature to each other, symbiotic relationships are created that enrich the design, experience, and neighborhood. Local artist teach after school classes and lead symposiums. Local community members act as mentors to urban youth through gardening and agriculture. The neighborhood benefits from an array of performance and gallery spaces exhibiting unique work from collaborations outside a single field.
